Lessons to Live a Cozy Life

Candle lights before the sun comes up a temporary pleasure.

In my imagination, my future life is sunny and relaxed. There are flowers, candles, a dog, a cat, and a cappuccino.

I’m curled up in my plush chaise lounge with a book, but I’m watching the birds come and go through the window.

The plants in my garden are lush and in full bloom, and an open window puffs jasmine and honeysuckle-scented air.

But the reality I create doesn’t match. Instead, I’m always working on projects or my to-do list.

I can change.

The best thing about living temporarily with friends is seeing how they live their days and learning from the experience.

I’ve been staying with my friend Linda since I came to the Netherlands. Linda is all about living a cozy life: Candles, flowers, cookies, sweets, cappuccinos, music, and slippers.

I’ve started enjoying candles, too. Candles at night to wind down and candles in the morning with coffee.

My candle obsession is affordable because I get them at Action.

When my yoga class was cancelled I caught a train to The Hague. Delish.

I love coffee and lots of it (like most Americans, I dare say), but I’m in an awkward phase with coffee.

Reason #1:
Linda and I were at the shops one day, and she wanted to stop at a little cafe and have a cappuccino and a snack. I wanted to get back to work on my computer, but I thought—why not.

Linda ordered a cappuccino, and I ordered one of those, too. I’m not an espresso fan, but this was delicious, and taking the time to not rush off was beautiful.

I try to explore a different town or city in the Netherlands once a month. After a couple of hours, I like to stop for lunch, and I always order a cappuccino. It’s my special treat and reminder not to rush off.

Reason #2:
I’ve cut back drastically on coffee because of the pee factor. That’s a traveling tip—you’re welcome.

Linda's garden has intense colors & textures.

Sitting at the water’s edge with a cup of coffee, peering down at the minnows, watching the tall grasses sway, and listening to the coots yakking is incredibly cozy.

I’ve seen a giant orange koi fish and a pair of swans swim by. And a guy in a kayak.

Linda’s garden smells like carnations; sometimes, I eat my havermout (oatmeal) on the patio.

And then there’s Boris. Boris is a black cat living next door and likes to hang out in the garden.
That’s not his real name. I don’t know his name, and I don’t know his gender. It’s the same with “Melinda”, who lives next door.

Many cats live in this development, and most are friendly and social. I prefer indoor cats for myself, but hey, a neighborhood with cats is cozy.
