Here’s Why Architects Make Construction Drawings

Architects make construction drawings so the people who build the project have all the information they need to develop the owners’ vision.

You can think of construction drawings as recipes. If the architect leaves out a step or ingredient in the recipe, the builder will build what’s on the plan, but it won’t be right. It won’t be the builder’s fault; it will be the architects.

Let's Talk About Builders and Framers

Building a house requires many different skills—too many for just one person. Usually, the builder is responsible for the project, but they actually hire other qualified people to construct the different phases.

A Framer is a group of folks who build the walls. The walls are “framed” with wood studs, and the framers will build them as the plans show.

Framers Need Plans, Details, and Sections

The floor plan is not enough to tell framers everything they need to know. For example, the floor plan does not show how high to make the ceiling.

Architects create other kinds of drawings besides plans for framers: details and sections. I’ll tell you more about these later.

Architects Need To Know How To Build Structures

Architects must know everything about building a structure to show framers and other disciplines how to construct the project.

It takes experience and time. That’s why interns work for architectural firms—to get experience.

And experience is what makes you valuable to architecture firms. Let’s get started.

I Wanted To Be An Architect When I Was 11

But my mother said, “You can’t be an architect; you’re not any good at math.” I had to give up the idea of being an architect, but my desire did not go away.

Why I Make Art Projects Here

Yes, I make art projects here, but I’m not trying to be an artist. I have no plans to sell my art and have no art on my walls.
